TOKYO, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Water-related accidents left 242 people dead or missing in Japan in July and August, marking a third consecutive year-on-year increase, police data showed.
The National Police Agency (NPA) said in a preliminary report that the number of accidents at sea, in rivers and other bodies of water during the two months rose to 488 nationwide, up 35 from a year ago.
The situations involved 601 people, including 105 children of junior high school age or under, while the figure of 242 dead or declared missing marked an increase of six from a year ago, the NPA said.
Of those who died or went missing, 117 met with accidents at sea, followed by 88 in rivers and 20 in waterways, according to the agency. Enditem
