TASHKENT, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with visiting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Uzbekistan's second-largest city of Samarkand to discuss bilateral ties, the press service of the head of Uzbekistan reported on Sunday.

Scholz, who is on an official visit to Uzbekistan on Sept. 15-16, had been invited by Mirziyoyev.

During the meeting, the Uzbek leader highlighted the historical significance of the visit. Both leaders also discussed further expanding Uzbek-German relations, according to the press service.

As the trade turnover between the two countries exceeded 1 billion euros (1.1 billion U.S. dollars) last year, German companies have invested 800 million euros (890 million dollars) in the country, the press service said.

The countries will carry out a series of programs, covering such areas as green energy, the chemical industry, mechanical engineering, the textile industry and many others.
