NEW DELHI, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- India's federal home minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday the periodic governmental count of the country's population, or the census, will be conducted soon after years of delay.

India's census was due in 2021. The once-in-a-decade population count, however, was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and technical and logistical hurdles.

The minister did not give an exact date when the mammoth exercise would be undertaken.

The census of India is a decadal exercise to enumerate the country's population. It is one of the largest administrative and statistical exercises in the world.

Officials said the exercise requires visiting every household across the country and involves the services of 3 million employees. Enditem
