DOHA, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Joint mediation efforts towards reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip are ongoing, Qatar's Foreign Ministry affirmed Tuesday.

"Qatar continues to coordinate with Egypt, Palestine and international partners to achieve a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari said during the weekly media briefing.

Qatar's goal is to "contain the conflict and prevent a regional spillover," he said, warning of the potentially wider impact of the conflict on the region.

He reiterated Qatar's stance that "the two-state solution remains the only path to achieving lasting peace and security," as well as its call for restoring full control of the Rafah border crossing and other borders to the Palestinian Authority, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, including the Philadelphi Corridor.

Israel launched a large-scale offensive against Hamas in Gaza to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on Oct. 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and around 250 others taken hostage.

The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip has risen to 41,252, Gaza-based health authorities said in a statement Tuesday. Enditem
