VALLETTA, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Maltese Foreign Minister Ian Borg was appointed deputy prime minister on Tuesday, according to the government gazette.

Later in the day, Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela told journalists that Borg would also retain his responsibilities as foreign minister.

Borg's appointment follows his election on Saturday as the Labour Party's deputy leader for parliamentary affairs.

The other deputy leader elected on Saturday is Alex Agius Saliba, who is one of Malta's six members in the European Parliament. Enditem
