TOKYO, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Japan logged 2,933,000 foreign visitors in August, up 36.0 percent from a year earlier, marking a record high for the month, government data showed on Wednesday.

The figure also represents a 16.4 percent jump from August 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Japan National Tourism Organization said.

Still, the number dipped below 3 million for the first time in six months, partly because of cancellations of flights due to a typhoon, it added.

Visitors to Japan from the Chinese mainland stood at 745,800, representing the largest single group, followed by those from South Korea at 612,100.

The cumulative number of visitors from abroad between January and August surpassed 24 million, gaining by 58.0 percent from the same period last year, according to the organization. Enditem
