Uganda embarks on preparations ahead of 9th Woodball World Cup in China

MPIGI, Uganda, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's team has started preparations ahead of the 9th Woodball World Cup in Shaoxing, China, from October 15 to 21.

George Isabirye, the head coach told Xinhua on Thursday that they have stepped up training since they entered camp at the Bunjakko Beach in Mpigi District last Sunday. "This place gives us a good atmosphere to prepare well because there is a World Cup ahead of us," said the coach.

Isabirye explained that he had already selected the full team that would travel to China. "We are camping with the final team that will travel to China and the few weeks will give us time to improve on a few things," added Isabirye.

The coach also announced that he has selected Daniel Apita Olima and Joan Mukoova as the team captains who will lead the team when they travel to Shaoxing City in China. "I believe in the players I have selected as captains because they have the experience and have good abilities to lead," he added.

Paul Mark Kayongo, president of the Uganda Woodball Federation (UWF) told Xinhua that they are optimistic the national team will perform well in the tournament because most of the squad are experienced players.

The Woodball Cranes' squad is as follows:

Men: Thomas Kedi, Daniel Apita, Crescent Rwanyombya, Tonny Sekyeene, Edson Tumwine, Trevor Oming, Darry Gilles Amanyire, Delick Ankunda, Onesmus Atamba

Women: Joyce Nalubega, Jackie Naula, Joan Mukoova, Sandra Nabaggala, Noeline Babirye, Christine Birungi, Sanyu Mirembe, Alverah Mukamarinda, Precious Namubiru, Lillian Zawedde
