ADEN, Yemen, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Yemeni government on Thursday praised the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)'s recent adoption of a non-binding resolution calling for Israel to withdraw from occupied Palestinian territories within a year.

In a statement published by the state-run Saba news agency, Yemen's Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the resolution, which was passed during the UNGA's 10th emergency special session.

"The resolution's approval by a large majority of member states reflects the international community's support for the Palestinian cause and the call to end the occupation and alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people," the ministry said, according to Saba.

The ministry also stressed the need for collective efforts to achieve peace and establish a sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

On Wednesday, the UNGA adopted the resolution with 124 votes in favor, 14 against, and 43 abstentions. The resolution calls for Israel to end its "unlawful presence" in the occupied Palestinian territory within 12 months of its adoption.

It also urges Israel to comply with international law and legal obligations, including the advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice, and describes Israel's presence in the occupied Palestinian territory as a "wrongful act of a continuing character entailing its international responsibility."
