MOSCOW, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has dismantled a criminal network that enabled illegal migration from Africa to the European Union, it said in a statement Thursday.

The FSB said it suppressed the illegal activities of a criminal interregional group that specialized in arranging the entry and transit of individuals from the African continent through the territory of Russia to the countries of the European Union in exchange for monetary compensation.

The criminal group, which consisted of Ukrainian, Nigerian and Russian citizens, used fake marriages and false declarations of parenthood to obtain temporary and permanent residency permits, as well as private visas for long-term stay in Russia.

The group's profits have amounted to at least 60 million rubles (around 651,000 U.S. dollars) since 2021, the FSB said.

The group's leader and five of its members have currently been detained, and ongoing operational investigations are identifying other accomplices involved in the criminal scheme, it added. Enditem
