MADRID, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at his official residence in Madrid on Thursday, for the first time since Spain recognized Palestine as a state in May.

The visit is "a very important milestone in the history of our two countries," Sanchez said, calling for an urgent end to the conflict in Gaza and underlining the risk of escalation in the region.

It is "absolutely necessary" that the parties agree to a ceasefire, Sanchez said.

The visit highlights Spain's commitment to the Palestinian people, and to the two-state solution as the only way to end the Middle East conflict, Sanchez told Abbas, according to a press release from the Spanish government. Enditem
