ULAN BATOR, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Mongolians observed a Car-Free Day in the country's capital Ulan Bator on Saturday, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion, encouraging healthier lifestyles, and reducing air pollution caused by vehicle emissions.

During the event, all major roads in the capital were closed to both private vehicles and public transportation, transforming the streets into pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly spaces. Residents took the opportunity to walk, cycle, and enjoy the city in a way rarely possible in everyday traffic conditions.

Local authorities introduced the event as part of ongoing efforts to combat the city's growing traffic problem and improve air quality, a pressing concern in the rapidly expanding capital.

The Car-Free Day also highlighted the importance of more sustainable, eco-friendly transportation options, with various activities and events held throughout the day to promote physical fitness and environmental consciousness.

For many years, air pollution and traffic jams have been the most pressing issues in Ulan Bator, home to around half of the Asian country's 3.5-million population.

The Car-Free Day is observed twice a year in the capital city, once in spring and once in autumn. Enditem
