RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Luiz Henrique struck a late winner as Botafogo extended their lead at the top of Brazil's Serie A standings on Saturday with a 1-0 away win over Rio de Janeiro rivals Fluminense.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 95th minute when Gregore dispossessed veteran Felipe Melo inside the 18-yard box and passed to an unmarked Henrique, who tapped home from point-blank range.
The result at the Maracana stadium leaves Botafogo four points clear of second-placed Fortaleza while Fluminense remain in the relegation zone with just 27 points from 26 games this campaign.
"It was a well deserved victory because we dominated and had many chances to score," Botafogo manager Artur Jorge told a post-match news conference.
"We have to keep treating each game like a final because there are fine margins in this competition. We accomplished our mission today, and I'm confident that we can continue on this path."
In other Brazilian top-flight fixtures on Saturday, Corinthians won 3-0 at home to Atletico Goianiense, Vitoria prevailed 1-0 at home to Juventude, and Fortaleza romped to a 4-1 home win over Bahia. Enditem
