HOUSTON, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Authorities on Monday announced a reward of up to 100,000 U.S. dollars for information leading to the arrest of multiple suspects involved in a mass shooting Saturday night leaving four people dead and 17 others injured in Birmingham in the southern U.S. state of Alabama.

The shooting, which authorities believe was a targeted "hit" on one individual, took place in a busy entertainment area and caught bystanders in the crossfire.

The four people killed, aged from 21 to 27, have been identified. Among the 17 injured, five remain hospitalized, with four in critical condition, said Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond at a press conference on Monday.

More than 100 shell casings were recovered from the scene, Thurmond said.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with people running for their lives as gunfire erupted.

Carlton Peeples, special agent in charge at the Birmingham Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), said the FBI is working with local authorities in the investigation.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said gun violence is at an "epidemic level" in the city, calling for stricter gun control laws. Enditem
