VIENTIANE, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Laos' Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment hosted the first Forum on Carbon Markets to foster Laos' participation in international carbon markets.

The forum, held in Lao capital Vientiane on Thursday, gathered around 150 participants from the Lao government, civil society, development partners, and the private sector.

The forum provided the Lao government with an opportunity to share important updates on its policy landscape and strategic directions with project developers and international partners, Lao National Radio reported on Friday.

It facilitated discussions among partners on strategies for international carbon trading in alignment with the Paris Agreement.

Laos has been working to align its laws and policies with international standards to engage in Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, while also improving the efficiency and integrity of voluntary carbon markets.

"As of September 2024, the Lao government has progressed on an advanced draft of the Decree on Carbon Credits, which establishes a comprehensive framework for carbon project development and trading," Amphayvanh Oudomdeth, Deputy Director General of the Department of Climate Change under Laos' Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said at the forum.
