BEIRUT, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed, and four others injured in an Israeli airstrike on a residential building near Mar Mikhael Church in Dahieh, Beirut's southern suburbs, Lebanese TV channel al-Jadeed reported.

TV footage showed ambulances and civil defense teams rushing to the area to transport the casualties to hospitals.

The Israeli military has been launching fresh attacks on targets in Beirut's southern suburbs since early Saturday, claiming they were targeting Hezbollah weapons stored under civilian buildings.

The attacks followed earlier Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah's main headquarters in Dahieh, which, according to a statement by the Israel Defense Forces on Saturday, killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, along with other commanders in the militant group.

Hezbollah just confirmed the death of Nasrallah.

Israel has intensified its airstrikes across Lebanon since Monday, marking the most extensive military action in the region since 2006.

This marks the latest escalation of the ongoing clashes that began on Oct. 8, 2023, when Hezbollah started launching rockets at Israel in solidarity with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, prompting Israel's retaliatory artillery fire and airstrikes in southeastern Lebanon. Enditem
