BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Diego Martinez resigned as manager of Boca Juniors on Saturday following the team's 2-0 away loss to Belgrano in Argentina's Primera Division.

The result marked Boca Juniors' third straight league defeat and left them 12th in the 28-team Primera Division standings, 12 points behind leaders Velez Sarsfield.

"Tonight I'm not going to talk to you about the match as I usually do," Martinez said after the match at El Gigante stadium in Cordoba. "I just want to inform you that I have tendered my resignation. I've already told the board, the president and the players of my decision."

Boca recorded 20 wins, 15 draws and 10 losses under Martinez, who took charge of the Buenos Aires giants last December.

The 45-year-old expressed gratitude for the opportunity to manage one of South America's most successful clubs but admitted he was no longer the best man for the job.

"I think that at this moment, although we are all responsible, the best thing is for me to step down so that the players can make a fresh start. I'm grateful to the club and the president [Juan Roman Riquelme] for trusting me," he added.

Boca said that Martinez would be replaced on an interim basis by reserve team coach Mariano Herron. Enditem
