TOKYO -- Japan's incoming Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Monday he plans to call a general election on Oct. 27 as he prepares to take office.

The lower house of the parliament will be dissolved on Oct. 9, Ishiba told reporters, emphasizing the importance of obtaining the public's mandate as soon as possible. (Japan-General Election)

JERUSALEM -- Israel confirmed on Monday the killing of Fateh Sherif, the leader of Hamas in Lebanon, during an Israeli raid in southern Lebanon.

A joint statement from the Israeli military and the Shin Bet, Israel's domestic security agency, indicated that the Israeli Air Force targeted Sherif, citing his role in coordinating Hamas's military and political activities in Lebanon, including recruitment, weapon acquisition, and facilitating the group's efforts in the region. BEIRUT -- Hezbollah will continue to defend Lebanon and support Gaza despite losing its Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah and many commanders, said Sheikh Naim Qassem, deputy leader of the group, on Monday.

NEW YORK -- The United States has posted more than 100 deaths related to Hurricane Helene as of Sunday, according to CBS News.
