TOKYO -- Shigeru Ishiba, leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was officially elected the country's prime minister on Tuesday after winning a majority of votes in both houses of parliament.

The Japanese Diet convened an extraordinary session in the afternoon to choose the new prime minister. As the ruling coalition led by the LDP controls both chambers, 67-year-old Ishiba received 291 of 461 votes in the House of Representatives and 143 of 242 votes in the House of Councillors. BANGKOK -- Around 25 people were killed and several others missing after a bus carrying passengers on a school trip in Thailand's capital Bangkok caught fire on Tuesday, senior officials said.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Suriya Jungrungreangkit said the single-decker bus carrying 44 passengers on board, including six teachers and 38 students, from a school in northern Uthai Thani province became engulfed in flames shortly after midday.(Thailand-Bus Fire)

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan's consumer price index decreased by 6.93 percent in September this year compared to the same month of 2023, marking the lowest inflation rate in 44 months, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday.

The data showed that consumer prices fell by 0.5 percent month-on-month in September, compared to a decrease of 0.4 percent in the previous month. (Pakistan-Inflation)

TOKYO -- Unemployment rate in Japan decreased in August from a month earlier, the government said in a report on Tuesday.

MANILA -- Philippine authorities reported Tuesday that at least two people died and over 77,000 were affected in the wake of Super Typhoon Krathon that barreled across the northern Philippines over the weekend and early this week.

JAKARTA -- A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit off Indonesia's Southeast Sulawesi province on Tuesday without generating giant waves, the country's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.

The tremors struck at 4:28 p.m. Jakarta time (0928 GMT) with its epicenter 186 km southwest of Wakatobi regency at a depth of 631 km beneath the seabed, the agency reported. (Indonesia-Earthquake) Enditem
