KABUL, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- A total of 15 Afghan inmates imprisoned in Pakistan have been set free and returned to their homeland, Afghanistan's Ministry for Refugees and Repatriation said on Thursday.

According to the ministry's statement, the detainees were imprisoned in Pakistan for 15 days to two months. After being released, they returned to Afghanistan through Torkham border.

At least 44 Afghan detainees were released from Pakistan's Sindh province's jails and returned to Afghanistan last month.

Currently, 8,000-9,000 Afghan citizens are imprisoned in jails abroad. Most of them are held in Iran and Pakistan, data from the country's prison administration showed in September. Enditem
