Policeman severely injured, assailant killed in Istanbul shooting

ISTANBUL, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- A police officer was seriously wounded, and an armed assailant killed in a shooting in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Thursday.

The Istanbul Governor's office said in a statement that the incident occurred in the Tuzla district when police launched an operation to arrest a suspect wanted for crimes.

The police came under fire from inside a residence, resulting in one officer being injured.

Special operations units were dispatched to the scene, where they shot dead the suspect and detained two others. The dead had a record of being wanted for 10 different crimes, including "intentional homicide."

The Istanbul Police Department said the wounded officer is in critical condition.

In another armed confrontation on Sept. 23 in Istanbul, a young female police officer was killed, causing public outrage. The incident happened when a suspect apprehended by the police for motorcycle theft opened fire. Enditem
