KIGALI, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda has reassured foreign tourists and investors that the country remains a safe destination despite the recent outbreak of Marburg virus disease (MVD).

According to a statement issued late Thursday by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), a government department responsible for investment and tourism promotion, Rwanda is open for business and tourism while swift and proactive measures have been taken to contain the virus.

The RDB said Marburg is not airborne and is transmitted only through direct contact with infected individuals' bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces. The likelihood of travel restrictions is minimal, given that the virus does not spread asymptomatically.

Tourists can travel with confidence as operators, hotels, and service providers are following strict hygiene protocols, including temperature checks, regular handwashing, and the availability of sanitizing stations. "Tourism remains safe in Rwanda, with the health and safety of visitors remaining a top priority," it said.

Businesses across Rwanda have been advised to continue operating under the Ministry of Health's enhanced hygiene guidelines. These include temperature checks and handwashing facilities at entrances to ensure the safety of staff and customers.

The RDB reaffirmed its commitment to providing updated information and addressing any concerns businesses may have.

According to the statement, Rwanda continues to host large gatherings while ensuring that safety remains paramount. Event venues have been requested to implement additional hygiene measures, such as temperature checks and encouraging minimal close contact between attendees.

The RDB stressed that it remains dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of everyone in Rwanda while keeping the country open to business and tourism.

As of Thursday, Rwanda has reported an increase in the number of confirmed MVD cases, bringing the total to 37. So far, 11 deaths have been recorded since the outbreak began last month, while five people have recovered. The cumulative number of tests conducted to date has reached 1,009. Enditem
