More Sri Lankans seek jobs abroad in September

COLOMBO, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan departures for foreign employment increased 10 percent in September, compared with the corresponding month of 2023, according to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment on Friday.

The agency said 28,344 Sri Lankans sought foreign jobs in September in 2024, up from 25,716 reported in the same month of 2023.

During the first nine months of this year, over 240,000 Sri Lankans sought foreign jobs. Of the total, 70,396 were skilled workers. Saudi Arabia was the largest recipient of migrant workers from Sri Lanka during the period.

Sri Lankan workers remitted 3.71 billion U.S. dollars in the first seven months of 2024, a 10.3 percent increase over the same period last year, according to the country's central bank. Enditem
