TOKYO -- Japan's transport ministry has instructed checks for unexploded shells at three domestic airports on top of Miyazaki Airport, where a World War II U.S. bomb exploded on Wednesday.

Transport Minister Tetsuo Saito said Friday that the three are Sendai Airport in the northeastern prefecture of Miyagi, Fukuoka Airport in the southwestern prefecture of Fukuoka and Naha Airport in the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa, which were built in areas where the now-defunct Imperial Japanese military had air bases. VIENTIANE -- Laos received 2.6 million foreign visitors in the first eight months of 2024, up 19 percent from 2.2 million over the same period last year.

ULAN BATOR -- Most parts of Mongolia are predicted to experience colder temperatures than the long-term average during the upcoming winter, according to the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring on Saturday.

"During the upcoming winter months, most regions of Mongolia, particularly in the eastern part of the country, are expected to experience temperatures below the long-term average, along with increased precipitation," the weather monitoring agency said, urging the public, especially nomadic herders, to take necessary preparations for the winter ahead. DHAKA -- Nearly 300 people, mostly rural farmers, have been killed in lightning strikes in Bangladesh this year.
