BERLIN, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Bottom club Holstein Kiel rallied back from two goals down to share the spoils with champions Bayer Leverkusen in the sixth round of the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The Werkself got off to a fairytale start and needed just four minutes to open the scoring when Exequiel Palacios' through ball allowed Victor Boniface to score his fourth goal of the season after nutmegging Kiel goalkeeper Timon Weiner.

Leverkusen set the tone and almost made it two just two minutes later when Weiner was forced into a diving save to deny Boniface's second.

However, the hosts' efforts paid off in the eighth minute when Jonas Hofmann doubled the lead.

Kiel were unable to put up any resistance as Leverkusen continued to press forward and wasted several good chances, with Weiner saving Alejandro Grimaldo's hammer before Boniface's second goal was ruled out for offside on the half-hour mark.

The underdogs shocked Leverkusen against the run of play in the dying seconds of the first half when Max Geschwill headed home Lewis Holtby's corner to halve the deficit.

Xabi Alonso's men took control after the restart but still lacked the ideas to threaten Kiel's well-placed defence.

The turning point came in the 68th minute when Jeremie Frimpong brought down Armin Gigovic in the box to earn Kiel a penalty. Fiete Arp kept his cool from the spot to restore parity.

The visitors almost snatched a late winner, but Benedikt Pichler's fierce shot was saved by Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky.

Both sides pushed for an equalizer, but the scores remained level as Kiel held on for their second draw of the season.

"We have to do better, and we will continue to learn. We are not satisfied with our performance. The result is clearly our own fault. We didn't play smart enough after taking the lead," said Leverkusen coach Alonso.

The draw sees Leverkusen drop to fifth on the table, while Holstein Kiel remain at the foot of the table.

Elsewhere, first-half goals from Kevin Vogt and Yorbe Vertessen paved the way for Union Berlin's 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Wolfsburg returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over winless Bochum thanks to a brace from Jonas Wind.

Freiburg moved up to third after beating Werder Bremen 1-0, while Jonathan Burkhardt's brace helped Mainz beat newly promoted St. Pauli 3-0.

Earlier on Friday, Augsburg beat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1. Enditem
