DAMASCUS, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Three Israeli missiles hit an Iranian automobile factory in Syria's central province of Homs on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

The airstrikes targeted the factory in the Hasya Industrial Zone in the southern countryside of Homs, causing damage and columns of smoke, according to the Britain-based watchdog group.

The reason behind the attack is unknown, as the factory is empty, it said. While there has been no official confirmation yet, Syrian state TV reported that an explosion was heard from one of the factories in Hasya, and an investigation is underway to determine its cause.

Israel frequently conducts airstrikes in Syria, targeting what it says are positions linked to Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah. The latest attack came amid heightened tensions in the region, as Israel ramped up its airstrikes in Syria over the past week as part of its regional confrontation with Iran and Hezbollah. Enditem
