VILNIUS, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The wholesale price of electricity trebled in Lithuania last week to 131 euros (about 144 U.S. dollars) per megawatt-hour (MWh), reaching the highest level this year, due to cooler weather and a drop in power generation, local media reported Monday.

A significant change in the weather in the region was one of the reasons for the highest electricity price since January, said Aiste Krasauskiene, head of market development at Litgrid, Lithuania's state-owned power transmission system operator.

According to Litgrid, electricity consumption in Lithuania went up by 8 percent to 233 GWh last week, with local power plants providing 43 percent of the country's electricity needs.

Wind farms accounted for 28 percent of Lithuania's total electricity generation last week, followed by thermal power plants at 25 percent and solar farms at 23 percent.

Lithuania imported 61 percent of its electricity, up 32 percent compared to the previous week, or 182 GWh. Enditem
