ISLAMABAD, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Two terrorists were killed during an attack on the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province on Friday morning, the CTD said in a statement.

The incident happened in Sahiwal district while the CTD was shifting five terrorists after receiving a threat alert, the statement read.

During the transfer, some unidentified terrorists attacked the CTD convoy in an attempt to free their associates, and in the ensuing crossfire, two of the arrested terrorists were killed while trying to escape.

The CTD and district police personnel narrowly escaped unhurt during the gunfire, the statement said, adding that the remaining three terrorists were shifted to the jail where the convoy was headed.

The killed terrorists were involved in an attack in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in which 13 people were killed and over 20 others injured.

The slain insurgents had been sentenced to death by a local court in November 2022, after their involvement in the attack was proven.

A search operation has been kicked off to arrest the attackers. Enditem
