KAMPALA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's Ministry of Health said Friday that the country's confirmed cases of mpox hit 80 after nine new infections were diagnosed in the last 24 hours.

According to the health ministry, five cases were reported in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, along with one in Wakiso and three in Nakasongola, the current hotspot of the disease.

Among the 80 people infected with the disease, 97.5 percent are Ugandans and 2.5 percent are foreigners.

"People who have had mpox should not be stigmatized but handled with compassion," the ministry said in the situation update report.

The report also indicated that 35 people have recovered from the disease while 33 are currently admitted to various isolation and treatment centers, with no deaths registered in the affected districts.

Uganda's Ministry of Health, with support from the World Health Organization and other partners, has intensified preventive measures, including enhanced surveillance, case management, risk communication and community engagement, and public awareness campaigns to curb the spread of the disease, according to authorities.
