BAKU, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Azerbaijan on Friday concluded the Pre-COP29 climate conference in Baku, where officials from around the world gathered to push forward negotiations on key issues ahead of next month's 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (COP29).

The discussions at the two-day event themed "Enhance Ambition and Enable Action" focused on climate finance, adaptation measures, and the strategies to support communities hardest hit by climate change, according to the COP29 website.

"We are building bridges and momentum, but we need much more," said COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev. "Climate finance will be among the key topics during consultations, Pre-COP, and at COP29 itself," Babayev said, highlighting the importance of supporting the consensus achieved during COP28, particularly regarding the goal of accumulating and utilizing 1 trillion U.S. dollars annually to address climate issues in developing countries, especially island nations.

During the event, the COP presidencies including Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates and Brazil, unveiled a "TROIKA Roadmap to Mission 1.5°C" focused on enhancing international cooperation to meet global climate goals.

COP, or Conference of the Parties, refers to a series of formal meetings where governments assess global efforts to advance the Paris Agreement and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, with the aim of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The next conference scheduled to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November 2024 is expected to attract around 80,000 participants, making it one of the largest international events hosted by Azerbaijan. The main task for the November summit is for countries to agree on a new annual target for funding that wealthy countries will pay to help poorer nations cope with climate change. Enditem
