NEW DELHI, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Schools and other educational institutions were shut for the next three days as heavy to extremely heavy rains disrupted normal life in several areas in India's southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

The incessant rains were due to the northeast monsoon, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to local reports, schools across Andhra Pradesh's districts including Tirupati, Chittoor, Nellore, and Prakasam would remain closed until Oct. 17 as a precautionary measure.

Similar adverse weather conditions were prevailing in the state's Tugo area.

Several areas in Andhra Pradesh's neighboring state of Tamil Nadu also faced similar heavy to extremely heavy rains. At least eight flights were canceled as heavy rains lashed different parts of the state, including the capital city of Chennai.

The IMD said a low-pressure had developed over central parts of the south Bay of Bengal, resulting in the extremely heavy rains.

In a bid to tackle the developing adverse weather conditions, information technology firms issued work-from-home orders for their employees between Oct. 15 and Oct. 18, The Hindu reported.

The report added that extremely heavy rains were very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal area on Oct. 15 and Oct. 16, and over south interior Karnataka state on Oct. 17. Enditem
