TASHKENT, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- A scientific conference on the challenges and prospects for the development of nuclear energy was held in Uzbekistan, the Dunyo News Agency of Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry reported on Tuesday.

Opening the event, Sodyk Safoev, first deputy chairperson of the Senate of Uzbekistan's parliament, said the dynamically growing economy of Uzbekistan is leading to an increase in demand for energy resources.

"As an initial step in increasing safe nuclear generation, it would be possible to start with the deployment of modular small reactors, for example, in remote regions. This will modernize the energy infrastructure and diversify the energy complex with lower investment costs, meeting the demand for energy resources," said Safoev.

In June this year, Uzbekistan and Russia signed a protocol on executing a contract for the construction of a small nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan with a capacity of 330 MW. Enditem
