TOKYO, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Foreign visitors spent a record 5.8582 trillion yen (about 39.2 billion U.S. dollars) in Japan during the first nine months of 2024, exceeding the figure for 2023 as a weak yen boosted inbound tourism, data from the Japan Tourism Agency showed Wednesday.

For the third quarter, foreign visitors' spending came in at 1.948 trillion yen, compared to 1.3801 trillion yen during the same period in 2023, the data showed.

By country or region, visitors from the Chinese mainland spent the most in the third quarter, totaling 517.7 billion yen.

The average spending per visitor between July and September was 223,000 yen, compared to 163,000 yen in the same period of 2019 before the pandemic.

Separate data released on Wednesday showed Japan has set record highs for foreign visitor numbers for eight consecutive months this year as the country introduced a series of initiatives to attract visitors and boost tourism, bolstered by the weak yen.

From January to September, the total number of foreign visitors in Japan reached 26,880,200, surpassing the 25,066,350 recorded for all of last year. Enditem
