ZANZIBAR, Tanzania, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi on Wednesday urged African countries to address the housing needs of their growing populations.

Mwinyi made the remark while addressing the African Union for Housing Finance and International Secondary Mortgage Market Association Joint Conference on Unguja Island in Zanzibar.

He said African governments should spearhead initiatives to expand access to affordable homes, particularly for low- and middle-income families.

These initiatives should include the construction of large-scale housing projects designed to meet the demands of urbanization while ensuring affordability through innovative financing models and public-private partnerships, Mwinyi noted.

He underlined the crucial role of the African Union for Housing Finance and the International Secondary Mortgage Market Association in the global housing finance ecosystem by connecting institutions that provide secondary market liquidity for mortgage lenders.

According to Mwinyi, these institutions were vital in increasing global recognition of Africa's housing potential.

He also stressed the importance of cross-border collaboration in building sustainable, resilient housing finance systems that would bolster affordable housing efforts, not just in Africa but around the world.

The conference was themed "Building to Last: Realizing a Sustainable and Affordable Housing Sector in Africa and Beyond." Enditem
