HERAT, Afghanistan, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Personnel of the counter-terrorism police have discovered about two dozen pieces of arms, including assault rifles and a huge quantity of ammunition, during a series of operations in western Afghanistan's Herat province, said a statement of provincial police office on Thursday.

The contraband includes seven stocks of AK-47 assault rifles, 11 pistols, sniper rifles, anti-personnel mines, and thousands of bullets and explosive materials from the provincial capital Herat city and adjoining districts, the statement added.

Police have arrested five persons in charge of keeping the weaponry illegally, the statement said, adding that police won't allow anyone to carry arms unlawfully.

In similar operations, police discovered arms and ammunition in the eastern Nuristan province a week ago. Enditem
