JERUSALEM, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Europa League side Maccabi Tel Aviv beat Maccabi Haifa 2-0 in the classico match of the Israeli Premier League on Saturday.

The win raised the Israeli champions to 19 points from seven matches on top of the league table, while Haifa remained in second place, with 13 points from six matches.

Due to war restrictions imposed in the Tel Aviv area, the match was played at Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem, in front of 20,000 fans.

The first half was dominated by Tel Aviv, who scored by Gabi Kanichowsky with an impressive shot from the edge of the box in the 18th minute, and by the young talent Elad Madmon after five minutes from close range.

Tel Aviv missed a chance to grab the third goal in the 60th minute, with Haifa goalkeeper Sharif Kaiuf saving a penalty kick taken by Osher David, after Ali Mohamed brought down Dor Peretz in the box.

Haifa was close several times to getting back into business but a series of saves by Tel Aviv goalkeeper Roi Mishpati kept the score at 2-0.

On Thursday, Maccabi Tel Aviv will face Real Sociedad in Belgrade in the third round of the Europa League. The match was moved to Serbia under the ban on holding international matches in Israel due to the security situation. Enditem
