LONDON, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-1 on Sunday to remain top of the Premier League, with a one-point advantage over Manchester City and four over Arsenal and Aston Villa thanks to a man-of-the-match display from midfielder Curtis Jones.

On a day when Liverpool struggled to put a string of passes together against a lively Chelsea side, Jones won the first-half penalty that allowed Mohamed Salah to open the scoring from the penalty spot.

Nicolas Jackson equalized for Chelsea in the 48th minute, but three minutes later Jones scored what turned out to be the winning goal, as he timed his run perfectly to clip in Salah's cross at the far post.

Chelsea looked for a second equalizer, but Liverpool defended well and rode their luck to take the win.

John Stones scored a controversial 95th-minute goal as Manchester City came back from a goal down away to Wolverhampton Wanderers to win 2-1.

Wolves protested strongly against the goal, as City midfielder Bernardo Silva who was clearly in an offside position, affected goalkeeper Jose Sa's ability to save the defender's header.

Wolves had taken an early lead in the game thanks to Jorgen Strand Larsen's excellent finish and despite being bottom of the table they looked solid in defense until Josko Gvardiol curled in the equalizer.

Wolves defended well in the second half and were good value for a point until the controversial late goal.

Arsenal slipped up on Saturday when they were beaten 2-0 away to Bournemouth in a game affected by William Saliba's red card for a professional foul after 30 minutes.

Ryan Christe put Bournemouth ahead in the 70th minute after a corner and Justin Kluivert added a 79th minute penalty after David Raya had brought down Evanilson.

Aston Villa won 3-1 away to luckless Fulham, who took an early lead through Raul Jimenez,

A deflected Morgan Rogers shot equalized for Villa, but Fulham should have retaken the lead only for Emilio Martinez to save Andreas Pereira's tame penalty.

Ollie Watkins put Villa ahead on the hour with a powerful header before Fulham was reduced to 10 men when Joachim Andersen was sent off for a professional, and Issa Diop then sliced the ball into his own net for Villa's third.

Tottenham destroyed West Ham in 10 second-half minutes to win 4-1. Mohammed Kudos (who was later sent off) put West Ham ahead, but Spurs leveled before halftime thanks to Dejan Kulusevski.

West Ham then fell apart with Yves Bissouma putting Spurs ahead in the 52nd minute, before a defensive mix-up saw Alphonse Areola and Jean-Clair Todibo put the ball in their own net and Son Heung-Min then finished the rout with a goal on the hour.

Second-half goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund saw Manchester United win 2-1 at home to Brentford after Ethan Pinnock's glancing header had put the visitors ahead in first-half injury time.

Danny Welbeck's fifth goal of the season, 10 minutes from halftime was enough to give Brighton a 1-0 win away to a wasteful Newcastle, who had more than enough chances to win the game to lift his side to fifth.

Southampton were leading 2-0 at home to Leicester City and looked to be cruising after with goals from Cameron Archer and Joe Aribo within just 28 minutes.

However, Facundo Buonanotte's goal for the visitors in the 64th minute saw nerves set in, with Jamie Vardy scoring a penalty 10 minutes later and Jordan Ayew giving Leicester an unlikely win deep into injury time.

Iliman Ndiaye and Michael Keane scored first-half goals as Everton continued their recovery with a 2-0 win away to winless Ipswich Town. Enditem
