BERLIN, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The German government is striving to position itself as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) within Europe by fostering favorable conditions for the sector, according to a digital summit kicked off Monday in Frankfurt.

"We want to make Germany the leading AI country in Europe," said Volker Wissing, Germany's federal minister for digital and transport, at the government's Digital Summit 2024.

To achieve this goal, he emphasized the need for business-friendly implementation of the European Union's new AI regulations and greater access to data for innovative start-ups. He also announced plans to provide companies with additional support through nationwide AI centers, offering both practical and legal assistance.

Despite Germany's strong international reputation for academic training in AI, no German company currently ranks among the world's top AI firms. Europe's largest AI companies, Mistral AI and Contentsquare, are based in France, while in Germany, notable players include the Heidelberg-based start-up Aleph Alpha and the translation service DeepL.

"There are tremendous opportunities for AI providers in Germany," said Ralf Wintergerst, president of Germany's digital association Bitkom. According to a recent Bitkom survey, 84 percent of the 602 companies polled expressed a desire for more generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT. Enditem
