TOKYO, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks declined on Tuesday, dragged down by heavy selling amid growing uncertainty about Japan's general election and the U.S. presidential race.
Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended down 542.64 points, or 1.39 percent, from Monday at 38,411.96.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 28.44 points, or 1.06 percent, lower at 2,651.47.
On the stock market, a wide range of shares drew selling with the Nikkei briefly falling more than 700 points, as recent media polls showed that Japan's ruling coalition could lose its majority in the House of Representatives election on Sunday, analysts said.
Uncertainty over the U.S. presidential election in early November has also increased due to close contest between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, leading to caution among investors, they added. Enditem
