ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- An Ethiopian court has sentenced 24 individuals, including foreign nationals, to imprisonment for cross-border illicit drug trafficking activities.

The 24 individuals, who are said to be nationals of more than 20 countries including Ethiopia, were said to be trafficking different types of drugs, including cocaine, heroin, and cannabis, the Ethiopian Federal Police disclosed on Thursday.

According to the policing authority, a total of 176,881 grams of cocaine, 924,450 grams of cannabis, and 32,100 grams of heroin were seized in the investigation process during the Ethiopian 2023/2024 fiscal year that ended on July 7.

The investigation eventually led to the prosecution of 24 individuals, who were sentenced to prison terms ranging from two to 12 years in Ethiopia.

Police said the convicted individuals employed various techniques to smuggle drugs, including hiding them within body cavities, concealing them inside suitcases and shoe soles, as well as stashing the drug inside vehicle components.

While rehabilitating the convicted individuals, the legal measures taken by the court are also intended to serve as a warning for others against illicit drug trafficking activities, police added. Enditem
