LUSAKA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Zambia on Thursday celebrated the 60th anniversary of its independence from Britain, with President Hakainde Hichilema urging the nation to renew its commitment to building a prosperous future.
In his address broadcast on state television, Hichilema expressed optimism for the country's future, emphasizing that Zambia will continue to shine and remain united in peace and purpose for the next 60 years and beyond through collective efforts.
"With patriotism and faith, we must tackle modern challenges like climate change and corruption, striving to build a just and prosperous nation," he said.
The theme of this year's independence commemoration, "60 Years Strong: Honoring Our Heritage, Embracing Our Future," reflects on both the nation's past and its aspirations for the future. Hichilema highlighted the importance of Zambia's youth, calling them the country's greatest blessing and emphasizing that nurturing their potential is key to securing a prosperous future.
Reflecting on the sacrifices made by Zambia's founding fathers, Hichilema said the 60th anniversary is not only a time to honor the past but also to embrace the future with unwavering hope and determination.
He acknowledged the various challenges the country has overcome and expressed confidence that Zambia will similarly triumph over current difficulties, including the severe drought affecting many regions.
Hichilema also spoke of Zambia's democratic achievements, including peaceful transitions of power, respect for freedom of expression, and grassroots developments through numerous national initiatives.
The anniversary was marked with events across all 10 provinces of the country, with the main celebrations taking place in the capital, Lusaka. The day began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Freedom Statue, where Hichilema led dignitaries in honoring those deceased during the struggle for independence.
The celebration then continued at the show grounds, featuring an investiture ceremony recognizing individuals for their distinguished contributions to the nation, as well as musical performances from various groups. Enditem
