VIENNA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Walter Rosenkranz from the Freedom Party was elected as Austria's parliament president on Thursday following the far-right party's win in September's general election.
Rosenkranz, 62, was elected with 100 out of 162 valid votes that were cast in a secret ballot during the inaugural session of the new National Council, Austria's lower house of parliament, Austrian broadcaster ORF reported.
The Freedom Party won the parliamentary election on September 29 by securing 28.8 percent of the vote.
It is a traditional practice in Austria that the winning party of the general election nominates the parliament president.
While the Freedom Party won the parliamentary presidency, it has so far been unable to find coalition partners to form a government. Earlier this week, Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen tasked incumbent Chancellor Karl Nehammer, leader of the conservative People's Party that came second in the general election, with forming a government.
