TEHRAN, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- A senior Iranian cleric who was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt in southern Iran's Fars province earlier on Friday has succumbed to his wounds, the official news agency IRNA reported.

Mohammad Sabahi, the Friday prayer leader for Kazeroun County, was shot by an unidentified armed individual after leading prayers, the report said.

Sabahi was subsequently transferred to Namazi Hospital in the provincial capital Shiraz for surgery, but died due to the severity of his injuries, the report quoted Kazeroun's Governor Mohammad-Ali Bekhrad as saying.

The assailant killed himself after shooting Sabahi, Bekhrad said, noting that judicial authorities have launched an investigation to determine the shooter's motive. Enditem
