BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- River Plate missed the chance to move within sight of Argentina's Primera Division leaders when they were held to a goalless draw at Defensa y Justicia on Friday.
The hosts were reduced to 10 men early in the second half after Nicolas Palavecino's bad challenge on Maximiliano Meza earned him a second yellow card.
Despite controlling most of the possession, River rarely threatened to score and managed only three shots on target compared to Defensa's eight.
The result leaves River sixth with 27 points, 10 points behind leaders Velez Sarsfield, who have a game in hand.
Defensa y Justicia are 27th in the 28-team standings with 16 points from 19 games.
In Friday's only other Primera Division fixture, Nicolas Demartini struck late as Barracas Central salvaged a 1-1 home draw with Estudiantes.
Alexis Manyoma gave the visitors the lead with a 76th-minute goal before Demartini bundled home an equalizer in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Enditem
