BERLIN, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Jamal Musiala's first-half hat-trick paved the way for Bayern Munich's 4-0 win over Mainz on Wednesday, advancing them to the last 16 of the German Cup.
Bayern started brightly against Mainz and needed just two minutes to break the deadlock, with Musiala finishing off a fine combination involving Alphonso Davies and Harry Kane at the far post.
The visitors continued to dictate the tempo and control possession but were unable to create clear-cut chances against a deep Mainz defense.
The crowd had to wait until the half-hour mark to see more action, with Serge Gnabry hitting the woodwork with a rebound before Leroy Sane was denied by Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner.
As Mainz began to come to life, with Anthony Caci hitting the side-netting with a volley on the half-hour mark, Musiala doubled Bayern's lead seven minutes later by nodding the ball past Zentner.
Bayern broke Mainz's resistance in the closing stages of the first half, with Sane finishing off a counterattack, and Musiala sealing his hat-trick after latching onto Konrad Laimer's build-up.
"For me, it's always about the team getting better and better. It's not perfect yet. I'm a coach, it can never be perfect. So, we still have a lot of work to do. We did what we had to do today. We didn't achieve anything, and we'll just keep going," said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany.
