MANILA, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- A speeding passenger jeepney has plowed into pedestrians in Batangas City, south of Manila, killing two and injuring six others, police said Saturday.

Police said the crash, which happened around 4:40 p.m. local time on Friday, seriously injured the victims who were walking on the roadside.

Emergency workers rushed the eight victims to the hospital, where a 49-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man were pronounced dead.

The victims were reportedly village watchmen rendering All Saints' Day duty.

Police detained the jeepney driver, suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.

Jeepneys are the primary mode of transport for millions of Filipinos across the archipelagic country, especially in the countryside. Enditem
