VILNIUS, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania's gas consumption reached approximately 12.2 terawatt hours (TWh) in the first nine months of this year, a 31-percent increase from 9.3 TWh in the same period last year, Amber Grid, the state-owned gas transmission system operator, said on Monday.

Gas demand in Lithuania rose early this year due to slightly lower temperatures and lower gas prices in the market, which boosted gas consumption in electricity generation and fertilizer production, said the company.

From January to September, a total of 21 TWh of gas was transported through the gas system, a 27-percent decline from last year's 28.8 TWh. The reduction was primarily due to the Balticconnector pipeline, linking Estonia and Finland, being out of operation until late April, local news agency BNS reported.

Additionally, around 100 GWh of biomethane from agricultural waste were injected into Lithuania's gas transmission system during the first nine months of the year.

"We will continue to see progress in biomethane production and transmission. The third biogas injection point in northern Lithuania is currently being connected to the gas transmission system, and several more points will be connected in the near future," Amber Grid CEO Nemunas Biknius said.

In the first three quarters of the year, 78 percent (16.3 TWh) of the total gas supply came through the Klaipeda LNG terminal. Flows from Latvia accounted for 15 percent (3.1 TWh), while imports from Poland contributed 7 percent (1.5 TWh). Enditem
