VIENTIANE, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The ninth ASEAN Traditional Textile Symposium is taking place in Lao capital Vientiane, dedicated to promoting traditional textile practices and the cultural heritage of the region.
With a theme of "Weaving a stronger ASEAN community through cultural heritage and textiles", the event underscored the profound cultural ties that unite ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states, the local Pasaxon newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The event will contribute to the preservation of traditional textile arts and highlight the wisdom, dedication and creativity of the women who have safeguarded these invaluable traditions in societies, Naly Sisoulith, the spouse of Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith, said at the opening ceremony.
In Laos, silk weaving has been an integral part of the lives of women from all ethnic groups since ancient times, she said.
The event, taking place from Nov. 4 to 6, features panel presentations, exhibitions, and group discussions by local, regional, and international textile experts. Enditem
