KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Scores of ancient coins have been discovered in the Imam Sahib district of northern Afghanistan's Kunduz province, an official with the information and culture department of the province said Tuesday.
The discovery of the treasure took place on Monday afternoon while villagers were digging on a hilltop in Qaratipa village to build a house, the official said, adding the villagers had handed over the treasure to the local authorities.
Research and investigation have been initiated to determine the value of the coins and their historical backgrounds and ages, the official further said.
Earlier, police foiled attempts to smuggle a large quantity of relics including ancient coins in the southern Kandahar province last week. Enditem
