HARARE, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe on Tuesday successfully launched its second earth observation satellite, the ZimSat-2, announced the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development.

ZimSat-2, a low earth observation satellite, was launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia.

"This satellite will significantly improve our geospatial data collection and analysis capabilities, marking an important step forward in our nation's technological advancement. The Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development is pleased to report that ZimSat-2 is now in orbit, and initial telemetry data confirm that all subsystems are functioning optimally," the ministry said in a statement.

The satellite is expected to enhance national agricultural capabilities, environmental monitoring, disaster management, and resource mapping.

"This remarkable achievement represents a significant milestone in Zimbabwe's journey into space technology, underscoring our commitment to advancing scientific research and innovation for national development," read the statement.
