NEW DELHI, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people were killed and four others injured Wednesday after a truck hit an autorickshaw in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The accident took place in Bilgram area of Hardoi district, about 120 km northwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"The police team reached the spot and removed the victims to the hospital, where 10 people -- six women, three children and a man -- were declared dead," a senior police official Neeraj Jadaun said. "Four people injured in the accident have been shifted to the district hospital for better treatment."

"The truck has been seized. On the spot, people said the accident took place when the truck crashed into the auto in a bid to avoid hitting a motorcycle. An investigation is underway in this regard," he said.

Around 150,000 people are killed every year in about half a million road accidents across India, officials said. Enditem
